The headlines read “Ates vegas tout d’enchre au sex tout d’amour”. Listening to literature critical of male performance-enhancement drugs was hassle-spinner-inducing, and while it encouraged a change in attitudes, it also encouraged some doctors to prescribe Viagra to their patients.

Dr Laura Swirble, a medical student at the University of Oxford, said: “There is an enormous demand for these medicines in the UK and we’re talking about the use of Viagra (sildenafil) and tadalafil (dapoxetine) – two of the most well-known drugs for treating erectile dysfunction – at a rate of about 10 per cent each year, more than double the rate of men taking any other drug in the past five years.

“It’s not uncommon for doctors to prescribe these drugs to their patients, but it’s quite important that they continue to do so, and that they understand the risks and benefits of these medicines and their place in their prescribing practices.”

Dr Swirble added: “It’s also important that they understand the importance of the drug (and what it can and cannot do) in order to ensure that the patient understands the risks and benefits associated with the drug.

“This is one of the areas where the demand is so high that doctors are reluctant to prescribe, and it’s not uncommon for doctors to prescribe these medicines, and it’s not uncommon for doctors to prescribe these medicines.

“These drugs can help to prolong or increase the duration of sexual intercourse in some patients, but they do not enhance desire or arousal and it’s not the intent of this drug to treat the underlying cause of sexual arousal.”

Sexual desire can be an important part of a patient’s sexual experience. A study published in the New England Journal of Medicine in 2016 found that patients who took sildenafil (Viagra) had a greater proportion of their periods during sexual intercourse that lasted for more than seven days.

Other studies have also shown that the effects of tadalafil (Cialis) are similar to those of sildenafil, although the trials were conducted on men who are on sildenafil and tadalafil. The findings of the study, published in the British Journal of Urology in 2017, suggested that the effects of sildenafil on sexual desire were similar to those of tadalafil.

Dr Swirble added that patients with erectile dysfunction should not self-medicate – “if you have erectile dysfunction you should consult a doctor”.

Sexual stimulation is a central element in improving a patient’s sexual health and it’s important that doctors follow advice from a patient’s GP and medical specialist.

Dr Swirble also said that doctors who prescribe Viagra “should consider the potential side effects of the drug”, and they should advise patients “to avoid any drug that increases the side effects of Viagra”.

Dr Laura also said that it was important to remember that the risks of side effects from taking sildenafil and tadalafil are similar, and that patients should always discuss all the risks and benefits of using these medicines with their prescribing GP and doctor.

The drug is not suitable for everyone, including people with certain health conditions. It is also not suitable for most patients, including those with certain health problems, those with certain conditions (including heart, liver or kidney problems), and those with a known allergy to sildenafil or dapoxetine.

Dr Swirble said: “The side effects reported by the patients may not be suitable for all patients and patients should inform their doctor if they have any side effects while taking sildenafil and tadalafil.

“If you have any side effects while taking sildenafil and tadalafil, please don’t hesitate to contact your doctor. If you think you’re having a side effect, please inform your doctor immediately.”
